Where Care Flows: A Permanent Artwork for Queen's Hospital

Akanji Studio is proud to announce the permanent installation of Where Care Flows within the Haematology Red Cell Unit at Queen's Hospital.

Created to honour the people, acts of giving, and moments of care that exist throughout the hospital environment, the artwork celebrates the interconnected network of patients, healthcare professionals, blood donors, families, and support teams whose contributions help save and improve lives every day.

For many people, a hospital is more than a building. It is a place of treatment, recovery, uncertainty, hope, and resilience. It is where life-changing conversations happen, where care is delivered, and where individuals rely on the skill, compassion, and dedication of others.

Inspired by the Journey of Care

At the heart of Where Care Flows is the journey of care itself.

The artwork acknowledges those who receive blood transfusions and blood products, the healthcare professionals who deliver treatment, and the donors whose generosity makes that care possible.

As someone living with sickle cell disorder and relying on donated blood throughout my life, this project carries personal significance. While informed by my own experience, the artwork was created to reflect the wider community of patients who depend on blood and transfusion support for a range of conditions and treatments.

The figures throughout the piece are intentionally universal. They represent people of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences connected through a shared network of care.

More Than a Hospital Artwork

At Akanji Studio, we believe art can play an important role in the environments we spend time in.

Healthcare spaces should not only support physical wellbeing but also create moments of reflection, warmth, dignity, and human connection. Meaningful artwork has the ability to acknowledge lived experiences, celebrate those who provide care, and help people feel seen.

Where Care Flows was created with this belief at its core.

The installation stands as a tribute to everyone involved in the journey of care: patients, families, healthcare professionals, support staff, and blood donors.

A Vision for Healthcare Spaces

This project forms part of Akanji Studio's wider vision to bring meaningful art into healthcare environments.

We believe hospitals should be filled with artwork that speaks to the people who spend time within them. Artwork that reflects humanity. Artwork that celebrates resilience. Artwork that recognises the people behind every patient journey.

Because care is never delivered by one person alone.

It flows through many hands.

It flows through many lives.

It flows through all of us.
