Transforming Lived Experience into Powerful Visual Storytelling

Akanji Studio is a London-based art studio founded by Rizzy Akanji, creating work that explores the intersection of chronic illness, healthcare advocacy, and community healing. Through visual art and poetry, the studio transforms the lived experience of sickle cell disease into powerful creative work that inspires meaningful action around blood donation and health equity.
Our Mission: Art That Saves Lives
At Akanji Studio, we believe art can achieve what statistics alone cannot, moving people from awareness to action. Our work bridges the gap between personal health experiences and community impact, using creative storytelling to address urgent healthcare needs, particularly the critical shortage of Black heritage blood donors in the UK.
Every piece we create serves a dual purpose: to express the emotional and physical realities of living with chronic illness, and to inspire viewers to become part of life-saving solutions through blood donation and community support.

Rizzy Akanji is a visual artist and poet living with sickle cell disease, a genetic blood condition that requires regular blood transfusions for survival. This personal connection to blood donation informs every aspect of the studio's work.
Rizzy's artistic practice combines digital art techniques with traditional hand-painting and mixed media, creating textured, layered works that blend technology with human touch. Often created during periods of chronic pain and hospitalization, the work embodies resilience, transformation, and the power of turning suffering into beauty.
Artistic Approach
- Mixed Media Art: Combining digital techniques with traditional hand-painting and texturing
- Poetry: Written reflections exploring themes of survival, community, and healing
- Healthcare Advocacy: Art created in partnership with healthcare institutions to drive social impact
- Community Engagement: Work designed to inspire direct action, not just passive viewing
Sickle cell disease is the fastest-growing genetic blood condition in the UK, disproportionately affecting people of Black heritage. Patients require ethnically matched blood for transfusions, but the UK currently needs 16,000 more Black heritage blood donors to meet demand.

Why Blood Donation Matters
Traditional awareness campaigns often struggle to inspire action. Akanji Studio's approach uses powerful visual storytelling to help people understand not just the statistics, but the human reality behind the need, creating emotional connections that motivate people to register as donors.
Become a Blood Donor
The most direct way to support our mission is to register as a blood donor, especially if you're of Black, Asian, or mixed heritage. Your blood could save lives.
